Leslie John Long, Town Crier of Henley-in-Arden Retires

July 31, 2021

The Guild Secretary Peder Neilson has received an email from Leslie John Long, Crier of Henley-in-Arden, Warwickshire.in which he very much regrets that owing to ill health he must stand-down from the post.

Les goes on to say “I’m more than grateful for being part of the ‘Crier world’ for six years and I wish it could have lasted a good while longer but hey-ho we are where we are!”

Les adds “I appear to be a medical mystery. This has been going on for sixteen months and I’ve undergone many tests and scans with the top bods at the Royal Brompton Hospital and funnily enough everything seems fine apart from the fact I can’t breathe properly. The final diagnosis is that it’s pretty certain that it’s irreversible.”

A message from Peder, “I’m sure, that along with me, you all wish Les all the very best in his enforced retirement and thank him for nobly upholding the tradition of our calling.”

Here’s a link to see John in his role as Town Crier, marking the Queen’s 90th birthday in Henley-in-Arden 4th May 2016, making his proclamation.
